Communications intern in a vibrant agency environment
Monday morning and the clock has just passed 9 am. The 4th floor smells of coffee and in the room is already buzzing with talk about projects, brainstorming, and fun stories from the weekend. The address is Søndergade 45 in the heart of Aarhus and the place is called Heyday.
At Heyday there is a great mixture of employees including a handful of communication employees who managed the daily work with projects, campaigns, and research – whom, you as a communications intern assist and are learning from on a daily basis.
Hats is one of the words that describes being a communications intern at Heyday best – since we wear many of them. But, what does that mean exactly? It means that an internship with tons of different tasks, one day is rarely like another, which provides experience and teaches adaptability. So this is where the many hats are vitally important…
First: What differentiates Heyday from other agencies is the vibe of Aarhus and willingness to challenge both ourselves and the clients. The agency radiates with professional pride and a priority of having a broad range of expertise areas in house. This means that we are housing a film department, SEO and AdWords, project managers with individual fields of expertise, SoMe experts, word jugglers, UX and designers, and front- and backend developers.
All this know-how, experience, and skill sets gathered in one place, provides a unique opportunity for the communications intern to dive into different skills and absorb knowledge on all levels.
Which tasks can be expected as a communications intern at Heyday?
Life as a communications intern at Heyday means a multitude of different projects and different clients. This means tasks that are never alike which is exactly the reason why interning at heyday is not just educational it is an expierence.
Throughout the internship you obtain essential knowledge about each client and this knowledge makes the communication on behalf of that client much easier – e.g. when creating content for the clients’ social media platforms. Each client and company have their own expression and its Heyday’s job to implement this expression to their marketing and communication.
Back to the hats: As an intern you are working with campaign planning, execution, and maybe most important of all the subsequent evaluation process. Therefore, you must be prepared to wear the strategy hat, the execution hat, the analysis and evaluation hat, and the idea-generating hat.
Communication tasks are gradually becoming a broad base that spans from social media to strategy with SMART KPIs, target groups, SEO text, and PR work. The same goes for working as communications intern at Heyday where every specter of communication reaches your desk.
You might be thinking: “That sounds interesting but what does it mean?” It means that you get to generate idea, create content for social media, perform interview and write press releases, make storyboards for films, work with CMS-systems and apply text and graphic material to websites, write evaluations about executed campaigns and projects, and so much more.
It means the joy of having envisioned and created content for a client’s Facebook page and afterwards seeing the content on Facebook. It means daily hurdles because there is no one right answer on how to help all of the clients in the best way. Each client has specific needs and wants which you also learn as a communications intern: The ability to distinguish between the clients’ need and their wants. But that’s another story.
The environment at Heyday
A minimalistic office décor with green plants and a view of Aarhus certainly isn’t bad – and the same can be said about the office humor. The office is like a family that is growing every day. There is joking, seriousness, and lots of experience. The team unfolds their creative approaches and bad jokes at the monthly Friday afterhours, spontaneous trips to concerts, and invitations to mojitos.
All of this leads to an internship with professional learning, challenges and not least a strong unity between a team of very different people.
